Who do we help?
Home improvement agencies (HIAs) help older, disabled and vulnerable people repair or adapt their property so they can continue living independently in their own homes. Our advice services are available to people who are private homeowners or tenants of private landlords and live in the Dartford and Gravesham Borough Council areas. Our other services may also be available to people in other types of housing, please call the agency to check.
What happens?
Your HIA caseworker will visit you at home to talk about what repairs or adaptations you want done and give advice on work needed. They can also assess your personal needs and risks, your home and your finances (including checking you’re getting the right benefits) and, if necessary, find organisations to help with other problems. All advice is provided free of charge.
If you decide you want work to go ahead using HIA services, we will:
- List any work that needs to be done and get estimates
- Help you find and apply for funding
- Recommend and contact builders, instruct them and sort out payment
- Check the work while it is being done and after it’s finished
We usually see people within ten days of making an appointment. We can also help with building works you’ve paid for yourself. Please talk to us about our fees for private works.
Fees
Our advice service is free. We charge a fee of 11% of the cost of the building works where technical or practical help is given, ranging from plans and specifications to supervising the works. This may be covered in any grant awarded through the local authority.
Other services
- We offer services including a handyperson service, gardening and decorating to people over 60 or who have a disability.

- We offer a service to supply and install Keysafes to the outside of domestic properties
- We offer a service to supply and install Galvanizes Handrail to steps outside domestic properties
